Chief Executive's Report:

Julien Leys

Dear BIF NZ members and supporters,

Another month has been and gone, and it was a big month for us at BIF NZ.

We held an industry event alongside CreditWorks a couple of weeks ago, where we discussed the value of FINZscores and the proposed changes to the building liability scheme, which will move from joint and several to proportionate liability. We heard from different industry perspectives, from insurance, to merchants, to builders. Many thanks to our panellists Ronnie Tan, Warren Tucker, Thom Sullivan, and Ankit Sharma (who was unable to join us due to the weather, but still kindly shared his perspective), and to all those who attended.

I attended the Concrete New Zealand Conference, the Frame & Truss Manufacturers Association AGM, and the New Zealand Cooperative Awards (more on this below) of behalf of BIF NZ. These events were very interesting – it’s great to hear about what’s happening in the different areas of our industry.

I spoke with both The Platform and RNZ about the changes to granny flat rules. We had another Construction Industry Council executive meeting and we also observed World Standards Day on the 14th of October.

Not long ago, I sat down with Marty Verry of Red Stag Timber for our next episode in the Building Leaders Forum series. It was a privilege to join him in his beautiful home and chat about all things building - Marty tells it like it is and has some great takes on the state of our sector. You can view our newest episode on YouTube by clicking the thumbnail below.

BIF NZ: Building Leaders Forum with Marty Verry, Chief Executive of Red Stag Timber

It’s been a year of challenge and change for the building and construction sector, but things are looking brighter in 2026. If you would like to share your thoughts on organisations that help improve building practices and performance in New Zealand, please take this survey. Responses will help shape positive change for builders, designers, and homeowners as we look to the future. The survey will take about 10 minutes and upon completion, you can go in the draw to win a $500 Prezzy card. I highly encourage you to take a moment to complete the survey and share your views - your perspective matters.

Finally, as the holiday season approaches, it may be a good time to brush up on the employment rules that apply across public holidays and what your responsibilities may be as an employer or an employee – see an overview of the rules here.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the building industry supply chain, you can reach out to me via julien@bifnz.co.nz

Ngā mihi nui,
